How Will the U.S. Handle a Rising Spanish Side?

The United States women’s national team cruised through the group stage with nine points, three wins and three clean sheets. Though they were hardly tested by Thailand, Chile, and a weakened Swedish side (as Sweden benched some of its top players), the Americans looked nearly unstoppable in every match. Their performance placed them at the top of the group and set a match against Spain for June 24th at 12pm EST.

If you don’t know much about the Spanish side, you’re probably not alone. The team has only played in one World Cup before (2015) where they didn’t win a single match.

However, this year has played out quite differently. In qualification, they went unbeaten in eight games to earn their spot in the World Cup. During group stages, Spain defeated South Africa 3-1 in a come-from-behind win. They gave the highly ranked German team quite a challenge despite ultimately losing 1-0. Against China, they fought in a back-and-forth match that ended 0-0, allowing Spain to beat out China on goal difference for the number two spot in the group.

Now they face their most difficult challenge yet: the United States.

The two teams have only faced each other once before, on January 22nd of this year. With a goal in the second half from substitute Christen Press, the United States won 1-0. Both teams have relatively similar rosters in the World Cup to those used in the friendly.

Spain is led by star forward Jenni Hermoso. Hermoso scored two of the goals in the match against South Africa and has proven herself as a potent threat up top. The United States should watch out for Spanish efforts to get her the ball.

The United States has quite a few players to watch out for but Christen Press has to be at the top of the list. With her proven ability to break down the Spanish side, expect to see her on the field making constant runs down the line.

These are two talented teams in a do-or-die situation, the perfect ingredients for a nail-biter. With both teams enjoying control of the ball and favoring an attack-minded philosophy, there should be a lot of end to end movement in the match.

Despite the USWNT being seen as the one to beat in the tournament, their defense looked questionable before the World Cup began and has been largely untested during it. The match against Spain could be its first real challenge and players like Hermoso could do damage if she’s able to break down the back line.

In a seemingly David vs Goliath type matchup, don’t underestimate the Spanish side.
